WHAT: On the morning of the “Rise for Climate, Jobs, and Justice” march in San Francisco on September 8th, lead organizers are holding a press conference, followed by press availability for an extended group of spokespeople representing the many contingents behind this global day of action. Thousands will converge in San Francisco on September 8th, just days ahead of the Global Climate Action Summit, demanding a phase-out of fossil fuel extraction and a just transition to a 100% renewable energy economy. Organizers are emphasizing community-led solutions, starting in places most impacted by pollution and climate change.
The march will bring together people from across California, the U.S., and around the world, including those facing health impacts associated with oil & gas production, those recovering from the devastation of the state’s worsening wildfires, those working to resist the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure, and those advocating for and building solutions to the climate crisis within their communities. Contingents include over 300 groups, including environmental and climate justice organizations, communities of faith, Indigenous-led groups, labor organizations, youth, and many more. Please inquire about pre-interviews with spokespeople, conducting interviews along the route, and getting footage of the street mural and choirs.
Concurrently, people around the world will join more than 800 events in 90 countries under the “Rise for Climate” banner. In the U.S., over 250 events are planned in almost all 50 states at this time. Find more information about events happening around the country here.

ADDITIONAL MARCH DETAILS: Thousands will march through the streets of San Francisco on September 8th, just days before the Global Climate Action Summit, demanding commitments from public officials to phase out fossil fuel extraction and being a transition to 100% renewable energy that centers racial and economic justice.
The march will step-off at 11am, traveling from the Embarcadero down Market Street to Civic Center. Indigenous peoples will lead the march, followed by dozens of contingents carrying signs, banners, and art created for the event. At Civic Center, there will be a Resource Fair alongside artists and volunteers creating the largest-scale street mural of all time using natural clay and charcoal from areas in California impacted by wildfires.
The mural, which is being coordinated by the Society of Fearless Grandmothers and the Climate Justice Mural Project, will be surrounded by the Thrive Street Choir and the Peace Poets who will lead the crowd in song. Please reach out for more information about the mural.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS ACROSS THE U.S. (All events on September 8 unless otherwise noted):
- On September 6 in New York City, people will gather in Battery Park to call on Governor Andrew Cuomo, Mayor Bill de Blasio, and all elected officials move the state off fossil fuels through a just transition to 100% renewable energy. Around a dozen local actions will take place across the state around September 8. Details here.
- In Miami, Florida thousands will rally at a high-profile concert to call attention to the impacts of hurricanes and sea level rise on the city’s communities, calling on Miami Mayor Francis Suarez to walk the talk on real climate leadership. Details here.
- In Puerto Rico, 1,500 young people and their families will join together to urge the government to take bold and meaningful climate action, and motivating communities to initiate their own renewable energy projects. Community leaders in Ponce and Vega Baja are hosting events. More details here.
- In New Orleans, Louisiana advocates will focus their action on stopping the Bayou Bridge pipeline (BBP) and transitioning to 100% renewable energy, and traveling to neighboring St. James, in so-called “Cancer Alley” where community members are demanding Governor John Edwards create an evacuation route pending an inevitable spill from BBP. - In Tacoma, Washington communities will use arts and storytelling to show the intersections between those impacted by an LNG facility and those detained at the neighboring ICE detention facility. Details here.
- In Portland, Oregon a coalition fighting Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) in Jordan Cove will lift up frontline communities most impacted by LNG.
- In Flint, Michigan, a combination of labor, racial justice, faith, and environmental justice groups are gathering for the Michigan Environmental Justice Summit, which will work to develop a list of comprehensive demands for a just transition to a clean energy future.
- In Colorado, labor, faith and environmental leaders will bring hundreds of people together for a broad discussion to develop a clear set of demands for the next governor, who will be asked to support a just and equitable transition to clean energy.
- In Chicago, workers from the nation’s largest warehouse hub in the suburb of Joliet, will be joined by local labor leaders, community activist groups, advocates for the immigrant community, and environmental justice groups to make a series of demands of local elected leaders and business owners related to the area’s temporary low-wage jobs and diesel truck emissions and the need for 100% clean energy.
